Hot Backup Technical Tip

This page offers advice from our Senior Database Administrators.

Systems Effected
Oracle RDBMS Version 7.2 and above - All Operating System

Problem Description
The system crashes while performing Hot backups.

When you attempt to restart the database after the crash, Oracle says that Media Recovery is required, and the database will not open.

Oracle introduced a new feature in release 7.2 that allows the DBA to take individual datafiles out of hot backup mode when the database is mounted. This is done using the "alter database datafile 'filename' end backup;" command. As Media Recovery is not required, database downtime is minimised. Prior to Oracle 7.2, database recovery would need to be applied, which could result in lengthy and unnecessary downtime.
